i woke up last night because i was sorry for something i said to someone a relatively long period of time ago. i hate it when you honestly mean something i jest and it just comes out all wrong. further, people in my life - my firends, and family, tend to have a more dry sense of humor. They are a little more thick skinned. i was not used to the sensitivity that this individual had. i am not using this as an excuse, but i believe i am going to apologize to this party.

i had two reconciliations yesterday. it is a bit of a pain in the ass. i spend all this time walking them through their divorce. i draft the 103 divorce petition and assess all of the community property and debts. i make preliminary discussions with opposing counsel. finally, the people just forgive and forget. it stumps me. these are the same individuals telling me about their significant other's methamphetamine problems, and have photographs of the bruises, cuts, and welts that they have suffered. some people don't know what is good for them. oh well...best of luck.

shreveport is not a bad place. i think next summer i might talk to the indigent criminal defense group up here and see about doing some criminal defense. i think i would have a lot of stories if i did that.

i thought of a girl i hadn't thought about in a while. brains sure are funny things. it was nothing sexual and there was no longing, just recounting how much i believe i have changed since relatively recently.

got all my grades in, they were good.

watched a movie last night, "the big easy". it made me long for new orleans. they are correct when they say that things are just slightly different down there. i miss the bars, and the people. furhter i miss having something to do at all times.

here, mostly, i just cook, clean, work, run, dick around with my new macbook.

so what's up with you?

yesterday was swell. I looked at Rebecca's livejournal, and noticed i haven't really elaborated what it is i do all day..

well:

I get here at 8:30. I get some coffee from the break room, I check my email, check livejournal, and update my video podcasts. I write legal memorandums on intricate areas of law, ranging from consumer issues, to notice pleadings, to my most recent one, a construction fraud for a Katrina evacuee.

We have an intake department that screens potential clients. I look over their intake sheets and call them. I just ask "what's the problem" mostly, and takes notes as to their legal issues. I then take the batch of those and present them at the board meeting where we decide if we are going to take the case, or whether we will reject due to lack of merit.

I went to court yesterday. I spoke with our client, she was disputing custody and child support, as well as some community property debts/issues. We negotiated with the opposing counsel and did some pretrial dealings. It came to a point where we couldn't agree to one point dealing with a break in the child support for the summer months. We had to go upstairs to speak with the District judge. He was an older, bearded, glassed gentleman. I really liked his style. he sat in his office smoking a cigar, with his hands propped on his belly. This was a non smoking building, but who was going to argue with him? he was sooo southern. "When momma wants this, and daddy wants this, we have to split the difference."

we went back to his court, and he was trying another case. I swear, if i ever get bored, i can just go to his courtroom. You are allowed to request the opposing party take a drug test if there are children involved. I walk into here this "Son, you need to shut the hell up, because I am liable to hold you in contempt..you have already refused to take the drug test, and the only reason i am letting you have custody of the children is she is worse off, and your parents are taking care of the child."

we quickly finished up our case, and we went to lunch.

So, yeah, I go to lunch with various attorneys and judges, then i come back round 1:30 or so, and interview face to face a couple of clients, and maybe draft some letters. We have a support staff that does the typing and mailing, so i can just dictate them. I meet with the attorneys, and we talk about cases.

And then i get off at 5.

its a very entertaining position.

Last night was an experience. We were invited to dinner at this great restaurant, and there sit ten lawyers from one of the largest firms here in Shreveport. We eat, and drink, and talk, and I meet some intellectually engaging and interesting people. The conversations range from law to travel to wine.

The owner of the restaurant, i find out, is a client of the managing partner, who is there. The owner is taking our order, making sure our accommodations are fitting.

After a couple of hours, we move the 'party' to this swank piano bar. I am ordering dry martinis, and talking with some guys, and we are really meshing. I come to find out that the three gentlemen that I am talking to are the managing partners. They are the bosses. We hit it off really well, and I switched from martinis to SoCo.

One of the memorable parts of the conversation was when we were talking about life lessons. I stated that my father did very well with a very small, yet powerful statement: life is all about cause and effect. You take certain actions, and there will be certain consequences. I stated that i remember when i was 14 or 15, and I wanted to get piercings, and my father told me: "sure, you can do that, but no one is going to want to hire you." Sure enough, after saying this, the managing partners started laughing and telling me that they would never hire someone with piercings, and that i made a good choice.

What amazed me was when the bill came. There were only 7 of us, and i glanced and saw the $300 bill. This is not San Diego or L.A.; this is Shreveport, Louisiana. I can just imagine what my martinis were costing. Thank God the money wasn't coming from me.

I am definitely applying for an internship next summer with this firm. Their pay is exemplary, and the people are very personable.

We closed out that bar, and I feel like shit as I sit here and contemplate how to get very little work done today.

Kidding, One of the attorneys just came to me and asked me to draft this gentleman's will. just think, one misspelled word, and i could ruin some guy's life.

Crazy.

so, settled into the city. went to the public library, adn they are filming a movie outside of it. it is always funny to me, what they require for a library card. i have to go get my employer, the senior attorney, to write a letter saying i work here.

crazy stuff.

i don't know who is in the movie, but i overhood them saying demi moore...who knows.

saturday night, went to a place called phoenix underground. it was a club, and it was nice. met some people. made it home late.

how i wish i had boot camp installed. i really want to install civ 3. i am trying to download it from bittorrent, but it is taking forever.

Today was my first day at work. It rocks. I definitely want to be an attorney. Today was just great, i got to wear one of my new suits to work, and met everyone there. There seems to be such an atmosphere of respect for me. I feel so mature. In fact, I am here now, at a bar, enjoying a happy hour, drinking a drink, and thinking this is the first happy hour that I have taken where i am actually doing the happy hour...meaning, i got off of work and now here I am.

I stay at a very old house. it is only ten minutes from work, which is great. I live with a roommate, Evan, who is also from loyola law. We are getting along well.

i got back my first grade. I made an A in community property. Sweet. I deserved it.

i worked hard enough.

the drive up from shreveport was easy enough.

ha, i have a secretary.

went out to my bar last night.

talked with the bartender. she is having relationship problems due to an apparent role reversal. she says that she is not nurturing and emotional enough, and he is not tough enough. she made it sound like it wasn't the end of the world. i told her, hey, if that is the only problem yous guys face, ya'll will be alright.

next, the old man next to me started to talk to me. he is a retired insurance adjuster. i asked him what is the one thing that, if he could, do over again. he told me that an education is the most important thing that one can have, and that he wouldn't have had to work so hard had he an education.

something else memorable he said last night...."shit...money's easy to get....just go out and work, and there, you got money.... "

i thought it was oversimplistic but concise.

dayal came over and we started to tone up the drinking. Next person we met was this gay guy with two dogs. the female dog would come up to the male dogs face and hump it...or rather attempt to hump it. this occurred at least 17 times while we were there. apparently the guy dog just really doesn't care any longer...i don't know what's up with the girl dog. horny bitch.

gay guy told his hurricane story, i told mine. he leaves. we stick around for a while, pay the tab, then go to moonlight cafe, the restaurant owned by the bar owner.

it was cold there, but dayal got some chicken tenders, i got another beer.

talked to the guy there for a while...he said he was born in mexico, and was a jew. he says apparently there is a form of yiddish that is mixed with mexican and that is what he primarily speaks. went to college out in new mexico, and now he tends bars.

good stuff.

i am happy i went out and got plastered. yet another sunday started with "sunday morning coming down." it made me depressed all day, and drinking acted like a reset button.

with all these good things about drinking, where is the bad that everyone talks about?

later skater.
